Not only do the Somwang students love their school, teachers and lessons - they also really enjoy their occasional treats such as milk, soy milk or sticks with pork and other meats.
Unfortunately the daily diet of the students at Somwang school is still significantly poorer than that of the average Thai person. With foods like milk and meat being very expensive, the diet of Shan refugee families in Thailand and especially that of their children lacks many important nutrients, such as protein, iron, zinc, B vitamins and many others.
These nutrients not only support thousands of bodily processes, including building muscles, healing wounds and maintaining the immune system but they also play an important role in cognitive health, including memory, the ability to learn and reasoning.
The students enjoy the grilled pork like a rare treat and often even take some of them home to share with their families.
Hence, MPG is currently looking for donors who are willing to contribute small amounts to allow for a more regular supply of meat and milk, giving the students the balanced diet they need to grow, learn and play.
The costs are as follows:
- 5 sticks of pork meat for all 27 students: 300 Baht (9.60 USD)
- 1 cup of soy milk for all 27 students: 220 Baht (7.10 USD)
Please comment below, facebook message or email (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you'd like to help out with any of those costs. Preferably we would like to offer either soy milk or meat - or both - once every week.
This small change in the students' diet would have tremendous effects on their ability to learn and especially their health.
The easiest and quickest way to donate is through our Pay-Pal donation site.
Thank you very much for your kind support!
The MPG Team
The kids wear their new Thai farmers jackets to school on Fridays. It's the only uniform item they have.
Some of the students really got into brushing their teeth this afternoon. It looks like for some it turned into a competition...
We have many pictures and many wonderful smiles to share with you! Here is a first selection of photos taken on the first school day!
The MPG team is beyond excited to finally announce the opening of our new school this coming Monday, May 20th!
Based on previous success, MPG decided to start its own school, in order to accommodate a maximum number of Shan kids and give more children a chance to one day transition to the the local government schools and beyond!
Ever since our last trip to Thailand in January we have been working together with some of our local coordinators and teachers in order to locate the villages with the greatest needs for such a school.
There are many kids who are just as excited as we are for their first school-day!
The new school, which will be run by two teachers, is located in the midst of the idyllic orange plantations on which many of the children's parents are working. One of the plantation owners had the magnitude of heart to offer us one of his buildings which is now in the process of being converted to a fully functioning school!
So please be on the lookout for individual pictures of all the new students, and their names as we will introduce each one of them individually over the coming weeks! We will also introduce you to both teachers, life at the school in general as well as the school's name!
Lastly, we would like to thank each and every one of you for your strong and lasting support. Keep spreading the word and sharing our posts wherever you can! Monday, May 20th will be the greatest day our organization has thus far been able to witness. Yet none of it would have been possible without your help!
With much love, gratitude and excitement,
Felix for the MPG Team.
