Introducing Somwang School

We look forward to seeing how the inseparable siblings, Sai Ong (L) and Mon Lao (R), will evolve throughout their time at Somwang School and far beyond.
Somwang - สมหวัง - means to "fulfil" or "to have hopes fulfilled."

"Somwang" is the name we have decided on for our new school in the orange plantations near Fang, Thailand. Both translations - to fulfil, and to have one's hopes fulfilled - perfectly encapsulate our team's mission to allow our students to dream big and follow their own path.

The Somwang School aims to equip the children of Burmese refugees with the necessary English, Thai and Math skills that will allow them to transition into a local public high school. MPG is committed to support the Shan community by providing their children with a safe and comfortable learning space, where they are given the care and means to fulfil their dreams.

Please help us make the fulfilment of these children's dreams a reality by visiting our Donate page and making a contribution to our fund.

The kids will be more than grateful!

The way to school

On the second school day, we followed our students as they are being picked up by one of the Songthaew, a traditional share taxi hired by MPG.
The Songthaew, literally "two rows" derives its name from the two bench seats fixed along either side of the back of the truck. It is a common passenger vehicle in Thailand that is adapted from a pick-up or a larger truck.
Feel free to contact us or click on the link below if you'd like to help out with any of our costs.

The MPG team is beyond excited to finally announce the opening of our new school this coming Monday, May 20th!

Based on previous success, MPG decided to start its own school, in order to accommodate a maximum number of Shan kids and give more children a chance to one day transition to the the local government schools and beyond!

Ever since our last trip to Thailand in January we have been working together with some of our local coordinators and teachers in order to locate the villages with the greatest needs for such a school.
There are many kids who are just as excited as we are for their first school-day!

The new school, which will be run by two teachers, is located in the midst of the idyllic orange plantations on which many of the children's parents are working. One of the plantation owners had the magnitude of heart to offer us one of his buildings which is now in the process of being converted to a fully functioning school!

So please be on the lookout for individual pictures of all the new students, and their names as we will introduce each one of them individually over the coming weeks! We will also introduce you to both teachers, life at the school in general as well as the school's name!

Lastly, we would like to thank each and every one of you for your strong and lasting support. Keep spreading the word and sharing our posts wherever you can! Monday, May 20th will be the greatest day our organization has thus far been able to witness. Yet none of it would have been possible without your help!

With much love, gratitude and excitement,
Felix for the MPG Team.
